About the project

SSF's core activity is Twilight Basketball (TBB), an 'Education through Sport' programme.

FREE to participants (11 to 21 yrs), the initiative is delivered where and when young people are most at risk and in areas recognised as having acute anti-social behaviour problems and/or identified as areas of high deprivation.

Normally delivered on Friday evenings between 7 and 10pm, the programme is designed to encourage integration, self-efficacy, healthy lifestyles and good citizenship. These issues are tackled in a relaxed and informal environment. Generating a positive group work identity around an attractive and appealing activity offers a very positive backdrop to ask young people to consider key topics. Educational inputs address topics such as addictions, diet, activity levels and the realities of racism, sectarianism and territorialism.

Basketball is the main engagement tool in this programme - the activity is inclusive, played and watched by males and females in equal proportion, it also has a cool image through its association with R&B, Hip Hop, fashion and street culture. Basketball is a first choice sport for many young refugee and asylum seekers and Scottish Sports Futures benefits from a unique partnership with the Scottish Rocks professional basketball team, allowing access to professional role models and inspirational athletes.
