Jump2It
With a focus on at risk youth “Jump2it” is a Scotland wide primary schools health and citizenship programme utilising professional athletes to deliver interactive workshops on the dangers of alcohol abuse, smoking, the benefits of regular physical activity and a healthy diet. A combination of classroom learning and active participation for 10 to 12 year olds promotes healthy lifestyle choices.
Jump2it tackles the identified Scottish Government strategic targets to:
“Make Scotland more active”
“Tackle alcohol misuse in Scotland”
“Stub out smoking”
“Encourage the nation to adopt a healthier diet”
Independent evaluation of the Jump2it programme (SCRE and MPConsultancy) has confirmed that the use of sporting role models is effective and SSF capitalise on the impact that players offer with youngsters. J2it is reported as effective in re-enforcing health education, increasing information retention and participation levels. Schools praise - format, fit with health curriculum, inclusive nature and opportunity to compete with other schools.
“Reported Outcomes Glasgow (MPConsultancy evaluation):
• A statistically significant increase in weekend physical activity levels in pupils after receiving the Jump2it programme (6-8 weeks post delivery)
• A statistically significant increase in knowledge around the Jump2it health topics (6-8 weeks post delivery)
• Teachers unprompted mention the role of J2it as supporting the health promoting school ethos
• Over 50% of pupils mentioned Jump2it when discussing healthy lifestyles
• Of 780 pupils over 87% said they now take part in more sport
• In Glasgow East over 60% of Rocks Club participants come from the lowest 15% Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD)
• 24 new clubs established
As well as delivering important messages and providing young people with the opportunity to meet professional role models, the programme also encourages continued participation through coaching, tournaments and the opportunity to join a local established clubs or if no clubs are availible a new Rocks Club.
In the last three years the programme has:
- Worked with over 470 schools
- Reached over 36,000 young people in deprived areas
- Had young people participating in 936 hours of Road shows
- Completed over 216,000 hours of coaching
- Held 30 Tournaments
- Brought over 132 schools to 33 finals in the Kelvin Hall
- Presented 132 schools with winners certificates and posters
